Here
is something I posted on a website regarding this day and
Grayling Fishing in general.
Hi There,
I fished the Tweed and Teviot at Kelso yesterday the 1st of
December. I had a great day with ten fish to 42cm. The smallest
was around 22 cm. and the rest just about every size in between
which hopefully indicates a healthy spread and stock of fish.
The weather and the river were just about perfect for fishing.
A relatively mild day with the water just over a foot in height
and nice and clear.
All in all a great day.
The main point of this post though is to say I was the only
one out fishing.
Bear in mind that this was the opening day on one of the prime
stretches of Grayling Fishing in the whole country.
I have read a lot recently about hoards of anglers and the
ever increasing population of Grayling Fishers but I never
saw a single soul on either the Tweed or the Teviot and I
was out for almost six hours.
I would also add that this is the norm when I go Grayling
Fishing in the winter.
I very seldom see anyone else.
I will admit though that I nearly always fish midweek as I
am in the shop on Saturdays.
However I would also say that the town I live in has a population
of around 15,000 and as the local Tackle dealer I can confidently
state I am the only Winter Grayling Fisher living here.
Ronnie Glass who is Chairman of the Kelso Angling association
also informs me that of the 190 full members (not visitors)
of the KAA he is the only Winter Grayling Angler. Many other
anglers that I speak to report similar findings to mine.
Now I am not denying that there are some days when parts of
the river get busy but I do think this is sometimes over emphasized.
I fish on average two days a week on the Tweed system in Winter
and as I have said I usually have the river to myself.
With regard to the odd busy Saturday surely the answer is
to have Sunday fishing and to open up more stretches of the
river to the Grayling Angler.
This would spread the load even thinner and allow the visiting
and local angler a wider choice.
Surely this is the way forward together with well enforced
Code of Practice and any talk of bans is distinctly unhelpful.
There are enough people out there who wish to, and indeed
have banned fieldsports without us having fellow anglers doing
the same.
Best Regards
